About Us

History

Aurora Industrial Hygiene, Inc. was formed in 1996 by a group of professionals to respond to the needs of the environmental community with highly trained and experienced industrial hygienists and safety professionals.  Aurora’s clients and work product have rapidly expanded since that time.

Mission

Aurora’s mission is to provide the highest quality industrial hygiene services to each of its customers through professional excellence, qualified staff, organized training, and proven field experience.

Staff Qualifications

Aurora’s personnel resources include Certified Industrial Hygienists, Certified Asbestos and Lead Consultants (CACs), CDPH inspector/risk assessors, Certified Safety Professionals (CSP), Certified Microbial Consultants (CMCs), and professional engineers, all of whom have extensive experience and are licensed and certified by federal, state, and local agencies. Each professional member of Aurora has over 25 years experience in their career field. Each field industrial hygienist has at least five years experience. President

Karen Shockley, CIH, CAC, CDPH Certified

Karen Shockley has been practicing industrial hygiene for over 20 years. She began her career as an Air Force Bioenvironmental Engineer, where she and her staff of 14 were responsible for industrial hygiene, radiation safety, and drinking water monitoring for a large Air Force installation with a population over 10,000 personnel.  She has experience in diverse industrial hygiene projects, including asbestos and lead assessments, remediation oversight (asbestos, lead, mold, and other hazardous materials), chemical exposure assessments, indoor air quality evaluations, and OSHA compliance audits. Other experience includes wildfire response (air monitoring), community outreach seminars with employees and neighboring businesses, noise exposure assessments, health and safety plan review, and contractor specification preparation. She manages the San Diego office of Aurora Industrial Hygiene.

Vice-President

Grace M. Rinck, CIH, CAC, CDPH Certified

Grace Rinck has been practicing industrial hygiene for over 20 years. Her experience includes developing compliance programs, conducting indoor air quality investigations, writing health and safety programs and specifications, inspecting and evaluating construction and hazardous material projects, and overseeing both large scale and small scale remediation projects. She writes and reviews technical specifications for asbestos, lead and environmental mitigation projects. She was on the advisory board for the Los Angeles Section of the American Indoor Air Quality Council (AmIAQ) from 2005-2010. As a University of California Extension Program Instructor, she received an outstanding instructor award. She has also written and taught training courses in environmental hazards and asbestos. As a former teacher, she has a reputation of providing in depth training classes that are specific to the client’s needs and has been praised for her outstanding abilities in the classroom. With extensive experience in risk communication, she’s able to skillfully handle potentially adversarial situations. She manages the South Pasadena office of Aurora Industrial Hygiene.

Gloria Chan

Certified Industrial Hygienist

Gloria Chan, CIH, CSP, ARM, CAC, CDPH Certified

Gloria Chan has been practicing industrial hygiene and safety for over 25 years.  Her experience includes performing various industrial hygiene assessments, evaluating and controlling of occupational and environmental hazards for client projects services for a diverse client base, and auditing client’s facilities in a variety of industries, including wastewater treatment plants, mining, port authorities, aerospace, government, correctional, manufacturing, hospitals, and food facilities for compliance with OSHA and environmental regulations.  She worked on various environmental projects including facility decommissioning/demolition, brownfields, environmental site assessments, hazardous materials surveys, and soil studies. Her experience also includes working for the County of San Diego – Department of Environmental Health for over 15 years – identifying and conducting a variety of health and safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, hazardous material/waste, and injury investigations for all County departments and County owned and managed facilities.

Senior Occupational Safety and Health Consultant

Josh C. Senter, CIH

Josh Senter has been practicing industrial hygiene since 1977. He has lectured on his industrial hygiene experience during the BP Gulf oil spill, as well as the medical aspects of chemical, biological and radiological warfare agents for industrial hygienists and safety professionals. Following increasingly responsible  leadership roles in industrial hygiene for U.S. Naval medical facilities, including service as a member of the Navy Medical Inspector General teams, he served as Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Environmental Team Leader for the Navy Environmental and Preventive Medicine Unit in San Diego. He developed occupational safety and health plans and provided support to the Boeing 787 project, including fall protection programs, and evaluation of general safety plans as they related to confined space entry, personal protective equipment, sight and respiratory protection programs.
